Corinna, here's a really cool way to get a soft portrait without filters: Create a duplicate layer. Significantly lighten the duplicate layer and apply the gaussian blur effect. Then set the blend method to Multiply. You can fiddle with the levels if it needs to be lighter or darker. Kinda fun.

I can't seem to find anywhere it reads "Multiply" ... but then, whoa, working with Layers in PS is not my forte (to put things mildly).

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Corinna- it's in the drop down layers pallete, next to the opacity slider. It's on the left and usually sais "normal" If you click on the arrow there are a bunch of different blend modes.
