As a side note though, check out how tack sharp the frog is.

Tell me why I can't do that with any other camera, but I can with a cell phone. In the dark.

Is your d7000 AF Assist Illuminator turned on?
I can take photos in the dark with flash and be sharp without any problems as long as I'm not too close (too close for the lens to focus).

It is, yes. The real issue is more of my own unsteady hands get to shaking typically

Push you ISO UP .... UP ... UP to keep the shutter speed up. I try not to go below 1/125 but I can hold it steady for a sharp shot at 1/60. I've even done a 1 sec shot before that was sharp while getting a blurred stream.
