Maine is also one of only two states that have an ensign, or flag for maritime use.

The other state with an ensign is Massachusetts.

Maine was part of Massachusetts until 1820. It became the 23rd state.

Maine is the only US state that is bordered by only one other state (New Hampshire), to the south and west. To the north are Quebec and New Brunswick, and to the east, the Gulf of Maine (Atlantic Ocean). Maine also shares a maritime border with Nova Scotia.
