I'm new at photography but recently I've been really into shooting hockey. The problem with small town arenas around my area is the lighting is horrible, which means noisy pictures because I have to crank my ISO. I went into Henry's photography store and the lens they suggested was $2500, which is a bit too costly for me saying I'm still a highschool student. Any recommendations for lenses that aren't super expensive that will be able to let in a lot of light for indoors, allow high shutter speeds and have even a bit of a zoom to them? Ive got the Nikon D3000, but I'll be upgrading to the D90, but they share the same nikkor lenses anyways so that's not too big of a problem. I use a regular 55-200 zoom at the moment, which is nice for zoom but not for sucking as much light in as I need.

I'd like to take a shot at doing some hockey photography, so I just ordered a 80-200 f2.8. The push-pull "D" lens is about $500 used on ebay. A new 2 ring (with faster focusing) is about $1100. The lens the store was recommending is probably the 70-200 f2.8, runs around $2200.

So buying lenses off of eBay, craigslist, amazon etc isn't too sketchy? I've considered it just was never sure if it was trusty and good or not.

More than half my lenses were purchased used. Just bring your camera and try before you buy. You also have to know what you are after and how much you are willing to pay. Lots of sellers want to get close to new price because the lens is "pristine". Just do some research and have a good idea of the value of the lens.

Amazon isnt sketchy at all, i have ordered so much stuff from amazon for my camera and had fantastic results, they are a great site
