I was hoping to never to have to ask this question, but... Is this lens fungus?

How big is it? Hard to tell, fungus in a state that causes damage is more like a spider web. I've seen other defects that look like snowflakes- more like coating problems or cement separation.

The only way to know is to get at the surface and try to clean it. Fungus at an early stage comes right off with ammonia based eyeglass cleaner.

It is under the front element and smaller than 1/16th of an inch.

Older lenses are so much easier to work on. Newer lenses, sometimes they make it hard to get under the front element. On this: I would either pop the front element myself and see if it blows or cleans off, or bring to a camera repair shop to have done. from the photo, it looks like a spec of glass. But like anything, you never know until you have it in for close inspection.

I am quite skeptical when it comes to removing the front element myself. Anyone know of any camera shops in Northeast Florida?

I am still open to info on whether that is fungus or not.

Some may suggest (found on the web) to bring the lens with you to a Tanning Salon.
Get a tan and kill the fungus via UV.
