Lens help w/ my 24-105 f4L

Has anybody encountered a grinding-like sound when shutter is half pressed with IS on. When IS is off, its completely silent.
This problem occurred yesterday for the first time since day of purchase back in April.
I've been reading some other problems with grinding noises with other lens but i want to know what the exact problem is or how i can fix it myself.

yeah that's normal, that's the IS working away, my 24-120VR does the same thing.

IS systems do make a noise and the amount of noise will differ based on a few criteria:

1) Lens itself - newer lenses are typically using better tech and thus have quieter motor setups.

2) Orientation of the lens - at some angles the motors must do more to move the elements and thus generate more sound (this is more an AF thing than specifically an IS thing though).

3) Degree of motion to counter - simply put the more shake the more the IS has to work.

4) Battery charge - I've read that IS motors can make some strain sounds as the camera batteries get close to their end.


As such do try using fully recharged batteries in the camera. Also remember that IS is very much a background noise when using a lens out in the field, but is easily noticeable when one is in a very quiet room (and can sometimes make people think its far louder than it actually/normally is).

If the sound is making a marked difference in sound and its not one of the listed above factors then you might well have an error with the IS system - if you can take the lens to a shop to compare sounds (as a final check) that would be ideal before having to consider sending the lens in for a warranty check

Thanks guys. I was just getting scared that i spent over $1000 on a lens that might soon break down. I hope its fine the way it is now :/

However i still dont understand where this came from or why it just decided to be louder than normal.

possibly you were in a quieter room? One of my film backs for my Mamiya sounds like a small AF motor, the other sounds like a blender. Both work great.
