Lens Hood

Hi, I have a question. A couple of days ago I bought a 75-300mm lens for my camera. It does not come with a hood. So... my question. Are hoods interchangeable? Can I buy any hood meant for a 75-300mm lens or do I have to buy a hood that is made specifically for that brand/model?

What kind of lens? It depends on whether or not its a bayonnet mount, or screw on. What lens exactly?

It's a screw on lens. (It is a Quantaray AF Tech-10 75-300mm 4-5.6 Lens for Nikon).

it has a bayonnett mount hood, which basically means you put it on and turn it a half turn to lock it. What does the paperwork say? I cant find what size it is.

The wider it is, the shorter the lenght it needs to be. Given that lenses have different diameter and different min zoom and max zoom, you need to buy a hood for the specific lens. Luckily there are some 3rd party companies that make those hoods for a lot cheaper.

The only thing it says is that filters need be 55mm to fit lens. So, because I'm a total dummy when it comes to this stuff... can I assume that I would need a 55mm bayonet mount hood?

I checked online at Ritzcamera.com and they sell the hoods, they ask for a size (ranging from 52mm to 72mm). So I would assume I select 55mm?

What brand? Bhphoto sells some decent pearstone hoods for cheap i got one for my canon 70-300

Any hood with 55mm threads will fit your lens. I like the rubber ones that are adjustable such as shown in the link below. Do an eBay search for "55mm lens hood" & you will get many choices.

Just because a hood fits your filter threads, does not mean its the best hood. For instance, my 77mm hood for my 70-200 would not work on my 77mm 17-40L because that lens goes fairly wide and the 70-200 hood is very deep.

Agreed with Taylor. Instead of buying online, take your lens to the closest camera store and try different hoods. You should ideally get the original one for your lens; if not available, then try the ones they have available in store and buy the deepest one that doesn't produce vignetting. (Deeper lens hood = more protection)
