Can someone explain why the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC sells for $649 pre-rebate and the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC sells for $1299.
I know the 24-70 will work on full frame sensors and the 17-50 will not.
Is there something about the focal range that makes the 24-70 more difficult to produce?

Just wondering why such a huge difference in price.

Thanks in advance.

You answered the question in your second sentence.

These lenses have a $750 price difference and the Canon 24-70 f2.8L ($1399 -> not the version II) and the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS ($1199) are only about $200 apart.
Maybe I am not comparing apples to apples.

Nope... that's pretty much apples to mushrooms. Tamron's lenses are essentially reverse-engineered from Nikon, Canon, etc. Some are easier and cheaper to make than others.

FX lenses are usually built as "pro glass" . They use better elements, more glass, etc.

It's all about the quality of the lens housing, the mechanisms, glass, and the coatings on the different lenses inside.
