Lens question...

I currently have a sigma 28-70 f2.8-4 for my Digital Rebel XT and am looking to get a better lens for portraits and all around shots. I have read quite a bit on this forum about the Canon 50mm 1.8 lens and it seems like its a good lens for the price but how much better is it than the lens I already have? Any info is much appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know the lens that you have but the 50 is faster in low light and it's very sharp. It may be a little long on a crop body though. See if you can set your 28-70 to 50mm and shoot for a while. That will give you an idea what the focal length is like.

Primes are generally sharper than zooms.
