Lens suggestions

I'm starting to do some research for my next lens and was hoping you could help.

I currently have the Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5 on my Nikon D80. It's been a very good all purpose lens but I'm now ready to get a little more specialized.

What I am looking for is a lens less than 100mm and the main emphasis for the new lens will be sports, general purpose and portraits. My budget is around $1,000 for the lens.

Thank you for the welcome and lens suggestion. I read some online reviews and they all seem to concur that it's a great lens.

What are your thoughts on having a prime?
