lense advice for D7000

A fast 50mm is a must have, however your camera has a crop sensor so u might want to consider the 35mm f.8g instead.

If u do go with the 50mm keep in minf that the new g version has improved optics and performs MUCH better wide open then the older afd version.

The fantastic thing about this is I know the guy from the firehouse has both a 50mm and a 35mm prime Nikon lenses that I'll be able to try out before I buy.

Just to clarify, crop sensor is referring to the DX format vs a full sensor FX format? If so, as I understood it a 50mm on an DX was equivalent to a 35mm on an FX format? Or do I have that backwards?

Yes, DX=crop & FX=full. To elaborate, on FX and 35mm film format, 50mm lens is considered a "normal" lens. So on DX a 35mm lens is normal.

That is backwards but you're getting it.

That's great that you can try his lenses.

Looks as if you know what you want already!

I think your list of desired lenses and accessories will fulfill all of your requirements, your right though about the fact you don't need to cover every focal length. When I first got into photography, I assumed I needed to cover every focal length possible. Then I learnt all you really need is a wide angle lens, a standard prime lens and a telephoto zoom lens. Also this way of buying lenses promotes discipline in the way you shoot, it leads you to consciously think about composition. Instead of just standing and zooming, you consider whether the best shot can be made in wide angle view, standard human eye view or telephoto view. A great way to improve your photographic skills!

Instead of going for 50mm f/1.8 AF-S get the AF 50mm f/1.4.

It is one decision you will not regret for rest of your photographic life

35MM <----be ready to deal with the chromatic aberrations, I sold mine

You might want to also consider the Sigma 50mm 1.4... it is a great lens. I don't recommend too many 3rd party lenses.. but this one rocks on my 7000. With the crop sensor, as a 75mm.. it is nice for portraiture, and general shooting. Great Bokeh!

I have an older Nikon 35-70 F2.8 D

Yep, I have the same 35-70 f2.8D lens, push/pull. It's the most over looked lens because it's discontinued so you don't this lens listed or being reviewed by popular sites. You can find it for about $300-500 used, depending on the condition.
