Less expensive lenses

It wasn't clear to me... But for around a $1000 USD, I wouldn't spend it on a all-in-one zoom.

Heck... the price difference (Tamron vs Nikon) is enough for a small fast prime to go along with the Tamron 18-270mm when you need something in less than ideal light.

OP, you may not find a lot of users here use all in one super zoom lens. There are, but not as much as you think. I recommend you visit site like Flickr and search "tamron 18-270mm" under groups. You should find few groups over there and see a lot of users posted examples. They may have discussion there.

If I am in the market for an all in one super zoom lens, I will seriously take a look at the Tamron simply because of the cost. The one that made by the camera company maybe better, but we are talking about super zoom lens here. Image quality is not going to be the highest priority here as long as it is not BAD.

Another point I like to make is, if I want to buy a super zoom lens because of the convenience, I may as well just get a super zoom point & shoot bridge type camera.

I guess there are two logics to this.
1. Save up and get the one you really one. It will take time before you get it, but you won't be wasting money and time on cheaper lens that don't satisfy you. Good lens usually don't depreciate in value too much. Also, good lens will last you a long time if you use it properly, and the quality doesn't fade off. The downside is, you could be missing a lot of shots if you wait out till you can afford one.

2. Learn to do more with less with a cheaper lens first. The downsides are obvious, but you get your skills seriously brushed up if you can produce good photos from what you have. When you finally get that lens you want, it will be an easy transition.

For me, I've waited long for what I really want. I stayed with film until I am ready to go for the D700 last year. I also waited 3 years before I got the AF-S 105mm macro. Before than, I just have to work with what I had and I still had a great time.

In case you don't already now, the new nikkor 18-300mm may be what you need.
