Thanks for the replies everyone.

I don't know why I didn't even consider buying a Powershot or some other P&S. To be honest, that's really what makes the most sense. I am looking for something for "snapshot" events/moments. It just hurts thinking of spending cash on a P&S that could be put towards glass.

If I don't end up getting a P&S, I think I'll look into the Tamron 17-50. I've never owned a Tamron lens but people seem to think they're great. Thanks again for all the replies.

The Tamron suffers from backfocus issues. Go for the 17-50/2.8 OS from Sigma.

Buying glass that YOU aren't set on using isn't really doing anything different than buying a different camera.
I have the 17-50 f/2.8 by Tamron. I really like it. It's not the end all to beat all, but for the price it's an outstanding lens.
