Dude I echo annamaria ... My only nit is that most of these black background images the flowers are floating in space. I'd like to see a bit more content. But that's just me.

JC, that's beautifully done on the flower. I love the tones, textures and colours. It's balanced and stable. You have the blues to balance the yellow and you've kept the shading to white, not lost it in tone mapping and saturation. It's colourful, delicate and full of texture.

The background though (still ), is none of these things. In fact it's the complete absence of all of these things. It's weird that if I posted a shot that was a flower cut and pasted on a background that didn't match (say the quality of light was different) it would be pointed out straight away. But nobody comments if it's pure black. But isn't it also where the quality of light is different, where the subject bears no relationship to the background?

This is the thing that hits me straight away with all these types of shot. That they are so unrelated that it's difficult to discern which is actually in front of which. This is the way I see the background.

But a really great job on the flower.

Man, Tim, I am so struggling to tune in to what your seeing and reproduction with Gimp. I believe you, I just need to work through it because I feel your passion in the flower. I just have not figured out a way to do it yet in Gimp. I am really challenged software wise because I don't care for it. I try to do everything in camera because I work 70-80 hours a week and have little time for edit.

Perception and black backgrounds

This is not about any absolute values or actions you perform, but about a deeper understanding of the way we see and perceive the images presented. I'm also aware that many do not see what I'm talking about so will try to explain that as well.
