Light meter is nothing but a solar panel converted from voltage ..

one thing alot of people probably didn't know..
You could measure light like a light meter with a solar panel and a volt meter..
if would give you the same reading as a light meter in fact probably more accurate..
here is this explained in case some want's to aruge this and don't really under stand this video also proves it..

But, yeah, the mechanics of light metering are pretty much as he describes...light hits a light-sensitive component, and the light's intensity causes an electrical response, the response is correlated with EV brightness level, and BOOM! You have your light-metering information.

I managed to watch more of that video than the last one!

He's right on his basic premise, but wrong about several things he claims. He's well over 100 years too late to be the 'first one' to show the link between light input & electric output from a photovoltaic cell. Edmond Becquerel demonstrated it 1839. Though he keeps saying 'everything is electrical' there are indeed many things that aren't even with in you digital camera there are non electrical components like optical filters.

It's not even a case of all light meters correlate voltage to light levels some use the resistance of their cells - IIRC that approach allows use in lower light levels, but requires the meter to have batteries.

I suspect even my cheap $10 lux meter will have a much greater linear range, accuracy, ruggedness and be cheaper than his DIY setup but he did say no-one would be likely to use his in practice. Sadly it doesn't work below 5 lux so isn't any help where my camera can't meter reasonably.

Proper light-meters are certainly more than just the cell & meter, they are arranged so as to be less affected by alignment, calibrated at a wide range of light levels & will often have one or more sheilds to allow multiple lighting ranges to be covered (ie beyond the sensors peak brightness). Accurate calibration can make a huge difference between a backyard toy & a reliable tool. Even something a simple as a ruler costs a whole load more if brought with a traceable calibration.

I have played with photocell since high school, Yup sun in volts out. However, converting volts to ISO, shutter speed, aperture, etc. with just the twist of a dial is why you buy a light meter. This is not to mention the incidence, reflected setting plus the fact that exposer is built into most cameras.

I fun experiment for sure but kind of like re-inventing the wheel.
