Light Painting??

Can anyone help me with how to do light painting? I seen it online and I want to try it so bad! What setting do I need to put my SLR on and does it have to be pitch black? Please help!

Try 30 seconds @ f/8, ISO 100 and just walk around in front of your camera with a flashlight in a dark room.
