I just went out to try my hand at getting light trails with a longer exposure. Does any one have any tips on this type of photography

They look good. For some real fun Google "light painting"

The trails look kind of cut off in places. I would suggest a longer shutter speed. Keep your ISO at 100 though.
Twenty seconds isn't going to get you much as you can see.
This photo below was a 898 second exposure of my living room at home, simply using an LED flashlight. This is "Light painting".

Here's an E-book on Light Painting. I remember seeing some of their works in DIYPhotography.

actually thats a link to get you to like some facebook page. I am personally not clicking that crap, if you are going to post a link to the actual ebook then do it, otherwise spam somewhere else.

Light trails are lines, and lines in photography look better when they are seen as diagonals, curves, s-curves, etc. So for the light trails to be interesting, they need to be angled relative to the viewing frame, or you have to find a vantage point where they will form interesting patterns. It also helps to have something "frame" the lights so that there is a context. In your examples, the lights appear rather flat, and the road is rather uninteresting. I know, I know - these were experiments. But to progress to visually-interesting images, you have to find a good vantage point, and some interesting side scenery.
