I think you did a great job on both. I'd prefer to see a little more shadow transition on #2, but it's still a nicely lit shot. If you want to play around with that, get your flash further out to the side. (keeping it close to your subject, just more off axis)

the second photo is nice. i would get rid of the massive tree trunk in the background and slightly move the face towards the top right corner..
