Another noob question, the portable light the guy is carrying, why is he facing it on the woman? What's the concept?

The photographer takes the photo with flash and the portable light reflects that?

The light is controled by the guy with the boom and the light is in the softbox he can move the light around to get different effects, the photographer does not have a flash.When shooting with ambient and flash you have 2 exposures, 1 for ambient which is controled by your shutter speed so if you want a dark background you use a faster speed, say your ambient reading is 1/125 F16 just raise your shutter to 1/200, the flash stays constant.
2nd exposure is your flash which is controled by your aperture

Hey Garry, that makes sense - I understand the shutter speed concept from before

What is the boom? Is boom different to the softbox? Or the boom is the flash light coming from the guy holding the softbox?

The softbox is just a light shaper that fits on your flash, there are allsorts of shapers look here Pro Softbox - Viewfinder Photography to give you an idea what can be attached to flash heads to shape light. The boom is the rod the assistant is holding all these parts come separate eg. softboxand boom and can soon mount up money wise, he will also be using these to trigger the flash The Flash Centre - Elinchrom Skyport Speed Universal Set
