When I plugged my D80 into my usb lightroom would start automatically. With my canon 500d it doesn't start automatically and theres no option for 'lightroom' on the autoplay windows feature for my canon.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Take the memory card out of the camera and put it in the computer.

Don't have anywhere for the memory card to go. Didn't have to do that with the Nikon

In lightroom, there is a screen/dialog for auto-import. There might be an option there to set LR to automatically open when a device is connected.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a card reader. They are pretty cheap and then you don't have to plug your camera into the computer. One time, many years ago, I had my camera connected to the computer and sitting on the desk. I snagged the cable and the camera went flying off the desk, I just barely caught it. I can count on one hand, the number of times I've connected a camera directly to a computer (for uploading images) since.

Haha that has happened to me a few times and i've caught it aswell. May well do that, cheers

grr I found that auto import but its greyed out and won't let me tick it. And when i select the memory card folder to be 'watched' for auto import it doesnt select it.. grrr nevermind ill have to do it manually all the time

Maybe try installing the drivers for your camera, on your operating system.
