What's the distracting brown spot that's out of focus on the left side there? Can it be removed?

Yes much. With a dof that shallow the bug was completely lost and just looked like something that need not be in the image.



All that being said; its still a spider which still gives me the heeby-jeebies!!!

I've been watching this one all summer and today is the first time I could get a head shot. Tomorrow I'm hoping for another head shot and I'm going to try to pull off a focus stack. This one was shot at f22 but the DoF is still too shallow for me.
 
I do agree the dof is shallow; but I was working with the assumption that you intended it to be that shallow
