A Little Grebe ( Tachybaptus ruficollis) on pond to which I have access too, quite close to my home. Much smaller than his cousin the Great Crested variety.

Good morning! The first time I saw one (just a couple years back) I was fascinated watching them, they were soooo cute and interesting to watch. It became a guessing game as to whether I could guess where they were going to surface. Tricky lil dudes, they change directions quickly under water. Beautiful image you capture there, bud.

Hi Kirk- Thank you for your comments, I agree they are skittish at best and its a hope and pray scenario to get a shot :)
Nice shot! I haven't seen them here.
Thank you Jeff- do they have them anywhere in the USA ?? Just curious

There are seven variants in N. America. I've probably seen them, but not close enough to identify.

Wow that is a lot we have several in the Grebe family here in the UK

Black-necked grebe

This small grebe has beautiful golden tufts of feathers on its face, contrasting with its black head and neck. Its steep forehead makes its head look 'peaked'.

Great crested grebe

A delightful, elegant waterbird with ornate head plumes which led to its being hunted for its feathers, almost leading to its extermination in the UK.

Little grebe

A small, dumpy grebe which often appears to have a 'fluffy' rear end. It readily dives when disturbed, surfacing unseen some distance away.

Red-necked grebe

Like all grebes it is an expert swimmer & diver. Breeding has been suspected in the UK but the potential sites are kept secret & birds given special protection.

Slavonian grebe

The Slavonian grebe is arguably the most attractive of the UK's breeding grebes, with its golden ear tufts and trilling calls.
