Background is super busy, and I couldn't get it as out of focus as I wanted to.

Other than the background I like it. It's really dark on the blacks. It's a good shot, but it doesn't capture the emotion or action of the game. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it's a just a shot of a kid standing at bat. I'd guess your challenge is to move so your background is better and to create MORE.

The background is pretty much like that at any angle. I have action shots, but I think I like this because of the down time. The anticipation is what I was trying to get here but I guess I missed the mark.

I thought about the first image and your intention with it after I left this post...
I think the other side for this player (facing him) and including the anticipation and concentration on his or her face would have helped to capture the feeling you were going after. Definitely a tougher portion of the game to portray!

Yeah you're right. Not something easy to capture from behind.

when you're on the 3rd-base side (as you were in the first photo), you'll have fewer opportunities to capture the faces of the batters because most are right-handed. unless you're trying to photograph a particular kid, try to shoot from the 1st-base side. as MLeeK said, it's important to catch the emotion and/or concentration on the faces of the young batters.
