Coyote I got from the North Valleys, Reno

They are pretty brazen around here. They have actually developed strategies for preying on pet dogs. They send up one single coyote very close to antagonize the dog, getting it to chase the coyote. The dog chases the coyote into the brush, were 10 more coyotes are laying in wait. Keep the dogs on leashes! ;)

Great picture!

Poor dogs, though :(

Very nice capture, and yep, they're smart critters! Lee

Great picture! They walk around my neighborhood right on the street! People don't expect them and think they are dogs!!

up here in maine we are encouraged to shoot the coyotes when we see them. I haven't shot one yet, but then I haven't really cared enough too, they seem to really want us too. coyotes are screwing up or deer population and overbreeding.

Both coyotes and mountain lions are considered pest species here. You do not need a permit or license to hunt them in our county. We really don't have problems with them over hunting other wild animals, but they really seem to bother the ranchers. I would personally never shoot either. Not against hunting by any means, just believe in using what you take. And I imagine coyotes don't taste very good;)

Coyotes are all over the place here, even in the middle of the city. Mountain lions aren't nearly as common though, so I never give specifics on the locations I photograph them in.

I had to rescue my neighbors cat from one last year, it tried to drag it out from under a car parked in their driveway. They are getting much too brave. But nice picture

Nice shot. I would love to get a close shot like this, while out in the prairie. But like some of you have mentioned, I would probably have more luck getting the shot just by cruising the neighborhood early in the morning.

I had no idea coyotes are an issue in the Northeast.

Hey Jason nice shot. Was in Lake Tahoe 3 years ago and got this one.

They really aren't we just don't like them that much. They kill other things we do like. it might gain more favor if it was a wolf but its really just a ugly dog. so there is no bag limit. Actually they were considering paying people to kill them for a while. I don't think they will be a problem for long up here in maine, there are a lot of advocacy groups trying to save the coyote from outside the state but about everyone in maine hunts and wants them smaller in population and the government is pretty content to have about all of them shot.

that would be a tough call for me, not a cat fan.
cat, or coyote, cat, or coyote....
hmmm.
But if they are starting to pay for coyotes (I should check on that) I might take some time and load up the weatherby...

Not a great fan of hunting myself, unless it is being used as food or for self defense. But the strategy they use to lure the dogs in is simply mind blowing. Now only if they could catch the road runner :-P

Pretty clever huh, interesting little read there and I had no idea they got up to that sort of thing.

Fine shot with nice sharp details. Like the eyes, really nice head on look and not something I ever get to see, so thanks Jason ...... BTW, enjoying the turtles ;)

Danny.

Coyotes are a "problem" species here too - even in the city they're taking small pets and threatening people - a friend had a pack obviously circling them (doing the same thing, obvious decoy coyote trotting ahead of them on the path, with hidden mates in the grass) while out for an evening walk with his kids.

I have a lot of respect for them, though. Not many creatures take what they're given and make a success story out of it. We shun our "pest" species (raccoons, pigeons, sea gulls, squirrels, coyotes) but we've destroyed their habitat and they've adapted to ours to continue their life. That's pretty cool.
