Does anyone know where I can find a manual for the Nikon Speedlight SB-50DX i've done a google search and all i get is "manual flash" when i search for a manual... it's new to me, and i'd like to know what all the buttons do.

also, it appears as though if the flash is on, and i shut off my camera the flash goes off too... is that normal or should I use the on/off button for the flash??

This is quoted from the manual (page 13):
"With a camera body that is compatible with TTL/D-TTL auto flash, the SB-50DX automatically turns off when the camera’s exposure meter turns off."

Consider getting a cheat sheet for your flash. They're laminated cards that fit in your camera bag with all of the important information. I own one for my EOS 5D and 550EX flash unit. They make one for your flash as well:

Cheers

Camera flashes are not all that complex... after using them 5-10 times, I made manual changes on my flash without even thinking about it.

Socrates beat me to it... Nikon keeps PDF versions of all their product manuals online.
