I currently shoot a nikon d90 and have purchased an 80-200 af-s f2.8, 50 af-d f1.8, 1.4 nikon teleconverter and kit 18-55 vr. I just sold a nikon 55-300 that was replaced by the 80-200. My original plan was to use the funds of the sale to upgrade the 18-55 to a 24-85 f2.8-4 or 16-85 for around $400-450 or even possibly a 18-105.

Today I saw and grabbed a completely different lens, a sigma 20mm f1.8. This was my first impulsive purchase so far and I guess my rational was to build a set of primes. I shoot photos of by children playing sports, family events and some nature photography. Any words of wisdom? Should I return the 20mm and replace the 18-55 as planned. I use and will continue to use the 80-200 and 50 the most as I like to fill the frame with my subjects. I know much of this is personal preference, however, it would be helpful to get some more experienced perspective.

Thanks!!

The 18-55 is a darn good lens in VR form. I used one for a couple of years with my D40, including a couple thousand shots over two weeks in Europe in '09. IMO, it's only real problem is being too short. I kept bumping up against the 55mm limit and lost shots due to having to change lenses. An f 2.8 lens will be a stop faster and you're gaining range but you're also paying a bunch for a not very big change.

I got the 16-85 VR to pair with the 70-300 when I got my D90 (since replaced with a D7000). I've found that it covers about every thing I want to shoot. Now, the only thing I use my 70-300 for is shooting radio controlled airplanes in flight. For low light situations, I use my 50mm 1.4 and zoom with my feet. I understand that Nikon is coming out with a new 50mm f 1.8 that's supposed to be really sharp.

I returned the 20mm 1.8. Too much $ for too little utility for me anyway. I'm still considering replacing the 18-55. Still have a gap from 55 to 80.

Since you were already thinking about a 24-85, if you have the funds i recommend a 24-70 2.8. You lose a little on the wide end when compared to an 18-55 or 18-105, but the lens is superb and worth every penny.

Agreed! The 24-70 2.8 is a great lens.

A gap between 55 and 85 is easily handled by taking one step forward or one step backwards.

Hmmm, and here all this time I always thought it was one step forward and two steps back.
