These are from this past summer with a point and shoot camera, I now have a T1I but still curious how I did.

Alright I'll give my first impressions on these.

1) It's crooked - it needs to be rotated counter-clockwise a bit so that the waterline around the supports looks level. Could use some white balancing as well.

2) Nothing jumps out at me - it's a nice shot though. Maybe crop it a bit to get that fence or net or whatever it is on the left there out of the frame.

3) The focus looks a little soft - with people pictures you always want to make sure the eyes are in focus. That's sometimes a bit more difficult on a P&S depending on what it was, but mind that with your DSLR. You also cut his fingers off on the left side of the frame.

4. This one looks a little soft to me too, but his eyes seem sharp, so I'm not sure what I'm seeing. Poor little guy lost his fingers again. The white balance on this one is badly in need of adjustment.

5. Good composition except you cut his fingers off again. This one could "pop" more with some contrast adjustment.

All-in-all, it seems like you have a decent eye for composition. Straightening, cropping, and white balance can always be fixed in post-processing, but you have to have a good shot to start with, so make sure you nail your focus and exposure.

I agree with OrionsByte! His arm in #4 is definitely OOF but you have a good base to start with. I also would look at cropping from the bottom in #2 as well as from the left side to really focus the viewer's eye on the focal point, which is the ongoing curves under the bridge. If you have the opportunity to go and re-shoot these with your DSLR, print and compare them to see the differences between the two types. Good start!;)

I am most certainly going to go and reshoot the bridge with my DSLR Might go get some this winter but in spring with everything starts to turn green again its on my list of things to do.. thank you all for your input I appreciate it.

so then this looks better
