Hello forum

I have a Canon Rebel XT with the standard 18-55mm lens and I am on the market for a new lens. I have shot with this basic set up for almost 3 years and would like to finally upgrade. My photography is really general. I like to shoot People/portraits, Automotive and Landscape. I don't know much about lenses but I'm looking for something with a large depth of field and I could also use some sharpening help. Any suggestions will be appreciated, I'll post some of my work so you guys can get an idea what interest me. Thanks!

for portraits u can go for the 50mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.4 if u got a higher budget.. it will work for most of what u listed..

perfect! i was looking at this lens earlier today. thank you

If you have a larger budget, the 24-70 2.8 might be a choice for your shooting style...

Yeah, the 24-70 2.8 is way out of my budget. I think I'm going to go with the 50mm 1.4, i found one for a decent price. I'm looking for something under $300

Also check out the 85mm 1.8. Very fast and sharp moderate long prime that's great for portraits and indoor shooting without a flash and even indoor sports. It's near L quality at a non-L price.

While I agree it's a nice lens, I own one, on a crop body it's pretty tight. FOV is equal to 138mm on FF or 35mm SLR. That's well into telephoto territory, and also above his budget. It's certainly a nice lens to consider down the road, though.

I think the 50 1.4 is a good choice. If you can get a copy in good shape for your budget, go for it. It's a definate upgrade from the 50 1.8. AF is faster, more reliable in low light, and much, much quieter. Optically it's significantly better as well.

Nice photos, btw. I really like #5.

Yah, well uh if you convert that to medium format its WELL into telephoto. It really bugs me when people compare FF to crop, its really not a huge real... Get a range that works for what you shoot on what crop you shoot... It only really matters if you are used to 35mm, and coming into digital with crops you wonder why you are getting a tighter crop with the same focal length...

I second 50mm F/1.4

Thanks for your help guys.

I will also look into this lens a bit too. I just found one around the same price as the 50mm 1.4

I agree that the 50mm is the best first lens. I was suggesting the 85mm as a second lens to round out the range. It's more expensive than the 50mm but relatively cheap for what you get. Maybe the second best deal that Canon offers lens-wise.

Take two steps back. That's about all it take to expand your FOV back to what it was on a FF. There is no standard working distance. That is one of the easiest and often cheapest things to change. Only costs a little shoe leather.

To the OP. If you have the working room for the 85, it is a great portrait lens.

I would suggest Saving your money for an L series Lens. if you keep your eyes peeled on Ebay sometimes you can get killer deals. I picked up my EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens which normally runs $1249.00 for $600.00. It was used but in excellent condition and well worth the wait.
