Lost Focus

Ive, had my Nikon D300 for a few years now and have noticed that the autofocus doesn't focus as sharply as it used to. Perhaps its just that I am pickier now and notice it more, but it is especially true in low light situations, I am wondering if sending it and the zooms I have been having trouble with might fix the problem. Any thoughts on cleaning or perhaps fine tuning the focus? When I zoom in and let the auto focus find a focal point then zoom back out and recompose holding the AE lock I get better results. It just seems like I never used to have to do this. Thanks for any help.

Cleaning the AF is not something that can be done without disassembling half the camera, but is something that is often needed. The AF unit is at the bottom of the camera and can attract dust. Most repair stores can do this for you and will cost in the order of around $100.
