I think I caught a lucky break with this picture, I love the people in the background- they look like they are discussing the handsome subject in front of them.

Any thoughts of something I could have done better?

I really like this! It's a great candid. Nice catch and good B&W conversion. Imagine how awesome eye contact and portrait orientation would have looked!

I'll agree half way with Laynea.
Portrait yes, but I think the photo would actually lose something if eye contact was made.
