Lucky Shot in Cades Cove

Nice shot. The animals in some places around know full well that they are completely safe and will allow people to get rather close to them. One of my standard shooting areas around here is absolutely infested with White-Tailed Deer and they will sometimes allow me to get that close as well. One morning when walking around the lake here I counted 47 deer in one lap around the lake ;)

I take it you missed all of the severe storms that blew through the area. They beat up Townsend, TN pretty badly Thursday evening and night.

Yes, we just made it into our cabin about 2 miles North East of Gatlinburg when the storm hit and what a ride that was. The wind and lightning was pretty rough. We had to clear limbs from the roadway on the way down the mountain after the storm passed.

Sadly, shortly after the shot above, a few kids, about 12 or 13 started running towards the deer and harassing the them, and of course they ran off, and the saddest thing was the parents just watched and laughed about their disrespectful kids actions. I think since Gatlinburg started attracting a completely different crowd, that sort of thing keeps getting worse…. sad day.

Good! Glad you are OK. I had actually decided to drive up there to. I was off Thursday and Friday and decided to go to Townsend on Thursday, spend the night, and hit Cades Cove on Friday. Wednesday night I started thinking about it and remembered the traffic in Cades Cove the last time I was there and decided to wait until it gets cooler to take that trip. I was sure glad I did or I'd have been in Townsend on Thursday night.

I'm not sure whether that area is attracting a different crowd now or whether parents just generally don't mind their unruly kids as well these days. I went to the zoo here today and was shooting photos of the Clouded Leopard cubs and a kid was literally right beside my shoulder screaming as loud as she could for her parents, who were less than a yard away, to look at the cute kittens. They said nothing whatsoever about her screaming in my ear. I think many parents just refuse to discipline their kids these days. I do know that I could not get away with things like that when I was a kid.

Whtie tail are some of the prettiest of the deer. I bet she didn't run far, probably used to little monsters running wild. That and this is the time of year where she most likely has a fawn hiding near by.

Cades Cove is one of the places I love to shoot. Always something worth the time to go there.

Nice shot; last time I was up there, the deer and wild turkeys were all over the place, and yes, they generally let you get really close before they get spooked. I haven't ever had too much trouble with kids scaring them off, but I've gotten pretty irritated with some stupid ADULTS that scare the wildlife off.

Two people died in those storms Thursday night--one in Townsend, one in Cades Cove--both hit by falling trees. Down in the valley where I am, pretty widespread damage as well, and at one point, something over 60,000 without power, including me.

I was still at work and after seeing the dark skies rolling in, deciding to get the heck out of Dodge and try to beat the storm home. I got out to my car and as I putting stuff in my car the wind blew the door closed, pinning me between the car body and the door, and the wind was blowing so hard I couldn't push the door back open. I was fine, though. Managed somehow to keep the little car on the road and get home...to no power.

Cades Cove, and the whole Townsend area, is one of my very favorite places to go for a day of photo shooting--but you couldn't PAY me to go up there on a holiday! I love to either take a day off during the week and go, or sometimes just leave work a little early and go up for the afternoon/evening. In 50 years of visits to the Cove, it has never gotten old or uninteresting.

I haven't been since I got my macro lens. I feel a little drive coming on soon... ;)

Might want to wait. One of the people in my office was there on Saturday and said he couldn't get in because of all the downed trees and limbs.

Yeah, actually most of the roads up there are still closed. They did reopen the Cades Cove loop road Saturday night, but I think ALL the roads that come off the loop road are still closed, as well as Little River Rd which runs between Metcalf Bottoms (a really popular picnic spot) and the Townsend Y.

I've got Vacation Bible School coming up next week, which means I'm busy with preparations for it this week. So it'll be two weeks before I can get up there anyway, and by then they should have most of the damage cleaned up.

There are also still "2 or 3" vehicles up there (I can't quite understand why the news continues to say this-seems like they could go ahead and pin down whether it's 2, or 3) whose occupants are not yet accounted for; the park officials believe they were all backcountry camping, but no contact has been made with any of them yet.

Wow, I hadnt seen these responses until now. I wasnt aware the stroms were that bad. We left town around noon on that Friday but didnt hear any of this. I know it was BAD at our cabin that sets about 2 miles north east of Gatlinburg.

Is everything back to normal now? Did they ever find the missing campers?
