How necessary are macro ring lights for macro photography?

Not essential - I've never used one nor has LordV

Also ringflashes can produce a very flat light with little shadowing and can be very difficult to diffuse the light from because of their design.

I actually recently heard of someone using this setup with their speedlight for macro. The example pics I saw with it were actually pretty decent for a nice easily adjustable and transportable set up.
