#5 is my favorite!

Some good shots! NUmbers four and five are my faves.

thanks guys

I shot here Saturday and Sunday and had a blast, the light was challenging but the action was amazing

Great shots. Yes the light was a little challenging Sunday morning, then got amazing in the afternoon, but most all the activity stopped then.

thanks buddy, i can hardly wait to go back

hey, was #5 with the d4? cause I just looked at my shot with the d800 at the exact same time of the exact same bird, and my background is pretty dark yet the highlights are blown out on the wing, haha, maybe the DR of the d4 is that much better then the d800. hmm.

just tell me if you want me to take this image, down, but I will post mine just for reference. funny to see how settings and cameras we can make the same image at the same time look a good deal different.

could also just be my style of shooting, I underexpose a bit more, just to be safe. and its kind of the look im going for.

Quite an interesting comparison.. D4, ISO 3200, F6.3, 1/1600th vs D800, ISO 400, F4, 1/1600th.. Were these a big crop? I'm a little surprised at the noise on the d4.. Nice series of images though. I like 4+5 the best also..

we were both standing pretty close to each-other at the time. here is my full frame from the d800 raw (SOOC), its not unlikely for my images to be cropped this much of coarse, and is totally fine for the web, i don't print images like this so, im not too worried.

i think randy was using a 1.4 teleconverter at the time. with my rough estimates i would think he would have to crop about 2/3 more to be able to match the d800 pixel per pixel resolution even with the 1.4 teleconverter. but yeah im sure we have all seen the reviews, that the d4 isn't light-years better then the d800 as far as iso goes. it is much better at focusing, i will have to give it that, im sure randy will confirm.

after we talked a bit, i believe my d800 may have some focusing issues after seeing how much better the d7100 does, and how the d800 is much less reliable, and hit and miss. i think it will be sent in.

yes my #5 was the D4 + 500 + 1.4
your image BG is darker because you were spot metering, I like this look way better. My shot was blown bad but RAW + LR5 fixed it fine
The D800's DR is much better than the D4 or any other camera and the D800's cropability is superb, only bested by the D7100

the noise on all of mine are due to my quick PP, I will PP these again after deciding which are keepers
Because I was matrix metering the white bird against the dark BG was totally blown out and instead of taking the time to select the bird in order to fix it I did a quick reduction in highlites (actually 100%) and a drop in EV (-.3) so the whole scene took the hit and then I sharpened it, all of this brought out the noise. I needed to select the bird only in CS6, which I will.

This is a very unusual place to shoot because you are shooting white birds and dark birds against bright BG-s and dark BG-s, back and forth so I am going to try Matt's approach of Manual,Auto ISO and spot metering. Normally I shoot Aperture and matrix or CW metering.
