Medium format film or new flash stuff

Hey guys and foremost I'm glad to join!
second, got a low budget of 350-400 max and have three choices.
1. Bronica etrs system
2. Basic flash system for my canon 30D
3. Better glass for my 30D

i shoot mainly old cars, most of the time rusty, most of the time during the day with good light.
And for a website.

Your inquiry is sketchy. Perhaps a sample photograph would help us to understand any possible shortcomings.

You didn't specify what lens you use, but I think external flash is nearly indispensable. For daytime photography a reflector can be a big help, but a flash will work at night.

Film only works if you have reliable workflow dialed in: film materials supply, dependable pro lab services(processing, scanning, printing); or well-developed survivalist skills in processing and scanning--all at costs you can live with. If so, then I'd go for 6x7 format instead of 645. MF gear is cheap now and well within reach, so go for the most negative real estate you can.

If not, then I'd go for fast primes for maximum DOF control.

As for lighting, I'd look here if you haven't for some ideas on what's possible and how to do it:

What do you think each item of gear would get you?

Film needs a supplier. Digital is sharper. You are shooting web page sized images with an 8 mpx body. Digital, even from raw files is very direct to web. How will a camera that needs a wet darkroom help you?

Basic flash? Or inexpensive flash? A couple of third party strobes like Yongnuo's and some inexpensive radio triggers, along with stands and umbrellas, perhaps... Or softboxes geared to small flash. This would give you much better light. You could under expose sky slightly and still light your subject. Big reflectors and some scrims would get you part way there.


Most better glass won't fit into your budget. The exception would be the "Nifty 50" which is a cheap plastic 50 mm f/1.8 lens. It runs around $130 or so, here.

if its just for a website, why bother with film?

I would suggest getting some lighting equipment. Learn how to use it and then move into some new glass for your 30D.

Looking into cheap yongnuo. I have a vivitar flash, can't remember the model off the top of my head. Kinda want to experiment with light painting with it.

Decided against MF.
