Messenger Bags...

I haven't carried a camera with me (at all times) in quite a few months now, mostly because my current bag is just too cumbersome and big. So I leave my cameras at home, in my big camera bag. I love it for traveling, but I want something for daily use, that I can also carry things like my wallet, phone, and other stuff in.

I used to have the Tenba Large Messenger bag, but I didn't really care for it either, so I traded it.

I'm looking for something that is smaller, can handle my F100 + 24-70 lens and maybe a single SB700, plus have places for my phone and wallet etc. I'd also like it to be relatively affordable, so those $200 bags are plum out of the question. And if possible, I'd like it in canvas or something other than blah black.

If you use a messenger style bag, which brand/model do you use, and what do you think its best features are?

I viewed a vintage, Czech Army item whilst searching for 'messenger bag' on eBay, the other week. Nice item; leather, compact, about $40 or so. Seller has a number available but didn't quite look big enough for a SLR c/w 3.5/28-70-type combination, which is what I was looking for, (I couldn't tell how deep it would open-up; looked possibly more like a document/map case). Decided on a padded camera bag, in the end.

I've been thinking about this option too... It wouldn't be any big deal to sew my own padded insert.

Something with also a belt loop sewn-in is handy to have, even if you wouldn't use it ordinarily. It's not a feature of messenger bags but a good extra to look for in a camera pouch.

Edit: Bags/messenger bags with a strap attached with clasps/clips rather than sewn-on. Pretty common. Gives the option of using better straps (which may be found in thrift store rummage-boxes for pennies or 'borrowed' from other bags/luggage).

If I were you I'd fork up extra cash to never have to buy another bag again and grab a Billimgham. If not I recommend the Think Tank Retrospective.
