What's new

Might be getting published!?

Well done! We're all proud of you. That's a great first step.

You just put another smile on my face Scott :)
Thank you !!

Hey Keith, got more info, it was a friend who contacted me because of my shots on FB. It is for the Tourism Guide for a village through their Chamber of Commerce so it will be a free publication as it stands now.

Those sort of guides normally (at least the ones I have seen) have a few pages where local businesses can buy space to put their info/ad.
If this has the same then ask for a quarter or eighth page to put your info there.
As "nice" as a credit is, in most instances it is pretty worthless. The only people who look at the credits are other photographers.

Hey Andy, thanks for your response :)

My biggest fear would be asking for that and getting it... then getting contacted for things that I'm not positive I can deliver. Lets call a spade a spade here, I'm VERY new and I'm still at the bottom of the learning curve and have a LONG way to go.

I get what you are saying and again, if it was a year from now and I had a portfolio FULL of great pictures and had a year's worth of learning behind me I'd be asking for more and what you are suggesting is perfect. At this point I'm not sure that advertising would be a wise move and perhaps would do more harm than good? I'm just trying reallllllly hard to keep my feet firmly planted here and not get ahead of myself.... but believe me it is very tempting to throw caution to the wind and let this carry me away and see where I end up.

My current goal is to find an awesome mentor and work on improving all of my skills and perhaps watch for small opportunities along the way to build up my "reputation?" so when I am ready to take the leap and actively look for clients I can say "published in X" etc...

I think you're playing this the right way. If, in the future, you do choose to market yourself for income, this is something to put in your CV. If you asked for something in return, they might change their mind...

Wow, they want 11 images, crazy! Not sure which ones yet..have to look them up.., still getting more info etc...

One picture is one thing but if they want 11 you should be paid something. That does not seem very fair to you honestly. They will be making revenue from advertising from this guide. At first I was with Darrel but this is a game changer. Im not saying charge them an arm and a leg but you should be paid something and do not let them take advantage of you.

At least ask for a small licensing fee. Even $10 a pic is better then nothing. They would probably give you this. Obviously someone there liked your work. They are local and you are local and they want local. So you are in a better spot then you think. I would say not to ask for the advertising since you are not confident in your services but if you have a website where you can buy prints then the ad could be for that.

OK I understand you may not want assignments which you might not be capable off and that is extremely sensible. Could you not have something along the lines of "prints for sale" or the like and if someone does contact you for a specific assignment then deal with that at the time.
11 images is a lot so obviously you have something to offer.
I won't go into my normal rant about not giving stuff away but seriously in this case you certainly should be getting something out of it.
If it was just a single small image then fair enough but 11 is a different matter.

There are alternatives to actual cash payments and if this is a tourist type publication then they may well be able to help with access or free passes to areas etc.
Always worth trying.

Oh and I didn't say previously but well done for getting them into the book.

Hey DJ and Andy, I appreciate all of your advice and have absolutely taken it all in and tucked it away for next time around. I can see what you guys are saying and I can agree to a certain extent at this point and absolutely agree for future opportunities.

I will be better prepared in the future because of this conversation and I thank everyone for their input and congrats.

For this one I'm going to let it be and do it for the credits (even if they only serve to stroke my ego a bit ;) and give me a reference for the future).
