Can you frame the question around your priorities? In general, OMD E-M5 is an all around better camera than the E-P2 and E-P3. The question left unanswered is it enough to justify the cost to YOU.

You can always use the money instead on some nicer lenses for your Nikon..... Depending on your needs, that may have a bigger difference on your enjoyment of photography than yet-another-camera-system. If you are looking for an smaller alternative but not P&S, then there are really really good deals on the older versions of Olympus Pens out there. Here:

Keep in mind that micro 4/3 is a pretty small sensor.

The size difference between a full frame sensor vs. an APS-C is greater than the difference between an APS-C sensor vs. a m/43 sensor.


Just to quantify for the OP, I shoot Full Frame, APS-C and m4/3 digital cameras. I'm not just reading some spec sheet. The m4/3 format is valid and growing.

If you are looking for something that is "good enough" as a smaller alternative to your Nikon, then you don't need to get the latest and greatest. Just do a little research, figure out how "new" you need to go, and weigh in the adv/disadvantages between the models. The E-PM1 for example... is TINY. For some a bit too tiny for every day use but in your case TINY just might be the ticket. I could have a blast with an E-PM1 + 14mm all day long as a pocketable shooter.

The problem is that I'm conflicted as to what I want.

Olympus E-P2 - Very Nice Price, but unsure if it has any issues with color reproduction.
Olympus E-P3 - More Expensive, Better Colors and Autofocus System.
Olympus OM-D EM5 - The cream of the crop, weather sealing, 16 MP sensor, etc, etc...

I'm not sure what would be adequate. It's not like I'm shooting sports and shooting in low light situations all the time, although it happens, I typically shoot outdoor portraits and city and landscape type stuff.

The e-P3 couldn't use an optical viewfinder and a hot shoe device at the same time, so it was some what limited for me since I use off camera flashes a good deal of the time.

Even the OMD doesn't have a optical viewfinder, it has an EVF. You can get the optional EVF for the EP2 or EP3, which I find very appealing.

Plus panasonic 20mm f1.7
Plus Olympus 45mm f1.8

All of that will be significantly cheaper than the OMD and get you enough capability that you wont mind leaving the big nikon at home for all but sports and low light . The two primes I mentioned are considered very well capable lenses wih fast apertures... High bang for buck. You should even have enough left over to get a EVF and still be under the cost of a OMD kit.

Want something more compact but not too much.... Epl3.

Thanks, I might actually get the EP2, it seems like a really good deal. I'll probably mess with the kit lens for a while, the VF3 viewfinder is probably what I'll get, I prefer to shoot with a viewfinder and I've heard that EVFs have gotten a lot better than what they have been, either way I need to go check this camera out before I buy it.

I own an E-P1 and adore it. The AF isn't super fast, but the color out of it is unbelievable.

Yes..the EVFs have improved quite a bit over the years. I highly recommend you opt for the slightly more expensive VF2 instead of the VF3. More resolution which makes a world of difference. The VF3 is newer (and cheaper) but the VF2 is better... Just be careful as the VF2 doesn't have a locking mechanism like the VF3. It can slip off of the shoe. Mine is tied to the camera via a stick on lens-cap-keeper.

VF2 is well worth the price.

If you like what you see out of the micro 4 3 system, then you can easily save up and get an OMD, E-P3, G5, or GH3 (or whatever is the newest) knowing that you didn't invest a lot into the E-PL1 (and can keep it as a second camera)

Oops, just meant viewfinder. Being able to use the viewfinder and hot shoe at the same time were why I switched. Not to mention, a new OM-D is not much more than a new E-P3.
