Nice shot. The tree in the foreground adds a lot to the overall composition.

looks real serene and peaceful, quite beautiful

maybe it's just me but the tree trunk in the foreground looks too bright as it draws my attention more than the pretty looking lake. maybe darken the exposure on it just a tiny bit??

No I think the exposure of the entire photo is very appropriate. It looks too good to be non-HDR or composed. The depth of field, from very close foreground to the background is well covered and the exposure doesn't make sense being in back light. Nonetheless, very nicely done!

Well from what i can see the sun is setting just below the trees in the distance, so to me it doesn't make much sense that the wooden log facing AWAY from the sun to appear so bright in contrast to the rest of the photo. This is just my 2 cents..

Thanks for the comments everyone. This shot was done non-HDR but I fully admit there's a bunch of Photoshop tweakage to the color and contrast. It's amazing what getting up early in the morning will get you :)

Great photo. The composition is excellent and it's got great exposure & tones, without the HDR effect.

My first thought, were along the lines of the poster who mentioned the birch log being a bit too bright. It doesn't quite look natural as we can plainly see which direction the light is coming from...but I think the brightness makes it too prominent in the composition...drawing too much of the viewer's attention...and making the rest of the image look a bit too dark in the process. It's still a very strong image though, well done.

Thanks guys, something to consider about the birch tree. I see what you're saying about the light and how strong it appears.
