ML-L3 remote help

I have a D40...and got my remote today. But I can't get it to work. It had the little plastic thing you pull out of the battery so it shouldn't be dead.

I went to the custom menu setting and then remote on duration and selected 15 minutes and went to the front of the camera and pressed away and nothing is happening. Is there something else I should be doing or is my remote or battery toast?

Is anything blocking the remote or the sensor on the camera?

You will have to change your shooting mode. Look at page 32 of your manual.
