play with it on cam, and then take it off, and keep goin!

i wish i could command with my D40. luckily i can go optical with my second flash, and i have a cable for when i just need the flash to be within arms length.

You can, just gotta buy an BS800/SB900/SU800 for the hotshoe. Darn expensive option though and a good excuse to learn manual flash, which I'm still trying to do:meh:

I had a ttl cable for when I had my D60, and it sure is nice to be able to handhold it without that cord getting in my face now!

yeah i hear ya...i feel very limited by the curly cord...holding a gripped dslr with lens one-handed whilst tugging it all sorts of directions with the flash cable is not that fun.
adding my quantaray flash was a good step for me...now i can shoot with 2 strobes...
next step for me is to get some of the cheapie radio triggers.

I would also suggest some foam core for reflectors.
