If you can't get enough depth of field using available light then your only option is to use flash. there are ways to deal with red-eye in pp but you can't bring someone into focus after you've clicked the shutter. Be prepared to use a flash with a diffuser or bounce the flash off the ceiling or a reflector to get enough light to allow smaller apertures and this won't happen again. I know your mom won't understand any of this but you should. If your flash is too powerful at short shooting distances you can use your smallest aperture your lens will allow or put tissue over the flash head to diffuse and soften the light in a pinch. Personally I like to bounce a flash off the ceiling (if the ceiling is white) for this type of shot

That's also the other issue, shooting with a 50mm your shutter speed should have been at least 1/50th or faster to avoid camera shake blur, which is deff prevalent in this shot as well.

Need a flash with a difusser or gel or something. Not enough light.

I will just use the flash with tissue paper next time or ask her to buy me a Speedlight

One of the biggest and most common problems we see with Noob people here, is that they shoot wide open (F1.8) and don't really know / understand DOF.

This is without mentioning that you missed focus, and your WB is off.

Yes. Auto WB chooses a different WB setting every time you click the shutter, which makes it extremely hard to edit a series of photos in the same setting. Meaning if you take a photo now, then turn around and take another (literally face a different direction), they could have exactly the same WB, or they could have completely different WB's.

If you aren't comfortable setting a custom WB, at the very least use the cloudy/sunny/flourescent/incandescent presets.

Ehhh... I'm going to disagree with Christopher, to a point. Nikon's auto-WB generally does a very good job of getting you in the ball-park of correct, and as long as you're shooting RAW, fine-tuning this is easy. The problem with shooting a fixed WB is that conditions do vary; that is: In one area of your house you might have several daylight balanced CFLs, so the light is somewhere around 5500K, but in another room, it's all regular incandescents, and the temperature is more like 4200K. If you're shooting with a fixed WB, you have to make sure you change it to suit every set of conditions.

Yes, I agree-ONLY IF YOU KNOW WHAT TO CHANGE IT TO. If you don't know or can't set a custom white balance leave it in Auto. It's going to be a better guess than you just guessing at what to put in there.

Best bet is to learn to set a custom white balance.

The light and angle are basics for getting great pictures. Experiment with these two and you'll catch really good picture
This seems to be a kind of ok, but the light is missing
