Monitor brightness question

what is yours set at - i have mine @ 75% but when i print with white house custom colour they are a tad darker. any of you adjust the contrast of your monitor?

This is a choice. If you have a DDC monitor you can quickly switch between a profile that tries to emulate prints and a profile that makes your pictures look good. The print emulation profile should have quite a low brightness, I use about 80 cd/m^2, though others use 100 cd/m^2. That looks quite dull, but is quite a good match for prints. In the studio we use a much higher brightness for assessing images for approval - about 160 cd/m^2. That is what the art director likes to see images shown at. The soft proof computer has a screen set to 120 cd/m^2 which is a good compromise between the two.

There are display calibration tools that are used to set display brightness, contrast, and color.

I think X-RITE's display calibration hardware/software offers the best value for the $.
