Monitor calibration

Ive just got a new monitor and the calibration is awful, how do you calibrate a monitor? do you need special equipment or can it be done be eye?

If you have photoshop, you can use Adobe Gamma to calibrate it somewhat, but really the best way is to buy a profiler from Colorvision. They have a usb Spyder which is relatively cheap.
