Monopod/walking stick

I'm planning on getting:

Monopod:
Sirui P-326
ca 100$
Important: Dont *fully* extend, spare one or two fingers for improved stability

Ball Head with Friction Knob:
Oben BE-117
ca 75$
Important: Arca Swiss Connector

Much higher price point though.

Why a ball head on a monopod?

Don't need a ball joint. I don't use tripods except at home and the only reason I wanted a monopod was for macro photography. And since I hike a lot I won't mind carrying one if I can use it as a walking stick as well so that was a key feature.

I have a large, heavy Kirk ball head on my monopod. The reason is simple...there are times that I can't angle the monopod to the angle I desire the camera to be at for framing the photograph. Some may consider that a left-right only swivel is sufficient for a monopod, but I still get myself in situations that for stability, the monopod is at an angle to the floor in front of me or even backward slanted through my legs, and I have the camera either horizontal or somewhat tilted slightly upward to capture players on a stage. The ball head gives me unlimited angle opportunity.

So, even though I have a cheapo monopod, it does the job intended, has unlimited angular capabilities with a ballhead, could be used as a walking stick with a ballhead handle, and makes a terrific weapon should the need ever arise. However, in crowded rooms where I normally use it, moving from place to place to get the next shot with the monopod extended more than 24" give or take is hazardous to everyone within my trip & fall range.

Thats the same one I linked to in my post. I decided to get on on the way home from work. It's nice, light and compact. It should do well for my macro work.
No it's not. The one I linked to is the purple one, you linked to the flashy gold one. :biggrin-new:

Why would the purple and yellow options be more expensive than the gold and white when they're all exactly the same in the dark?

I found that weird as well. But here in Canada at the place I bought mine, red by the way, all colours were the same price. It was a no brainer for $60 CAD.

Which is exactly why I use this. All the tilt from front to back without the loss of stability. The problem I have found with a ball head is that once the camera is no longer centered over the monopod the stability is gone. A lot of people use it for a cheap way to flop a camera over into portrait orientation putting the camera on the side of the monopod.

Oh come now. From you user name I have reason to believe you are female. We all know that the more popular fashionable colors cost more. :allteeth:

manfrotto all the way. this baby will support a D600 with a 70-200 f/2.8 with no problems at all. not as steady as a tripod obviously, but i get all the portability of a monopod with the ability to set my rig down for a minute without having to lean it against something.
