Love the sharpness and expressions. Great photos. The only thing I'm not crazy about are how big his pupils are..... Like they were shot in a dark room. Nice work though!

Yep smiling would be good! I did get several of them showing their pearly whites... but I
kinda like the expressions on these, it pretty much captures their personality and that was my goal.

im not sure I would personally consider #1 or #2 keepers, just because of the head chops.
#3 is very nice, as is the shot with the hat. I would consider shooting a little wider, then cropping to where you want it, but avoiding cutting off heads.

I think #3 is just perfection. The exposure, sharpness and color are great; the introspective look and the position of his arms and hands gives a completeness to the image that others looking off into the distance don't. The partially undone tie alludes to how boys get themselves disheveled quickly and is a faint echo of an adult after the end of the day.
That is really a great portfolio shot.

1,2 and the last don't have the complexity of 3, the limitations of the DOF are too apparent, the exposures aren't as good and the questions that the pictures raise aren't as interesting as #3.

thanks Pixmedic - Where in Central Florida are you? We were planning on moving there at one point. 20 miles South of Ocala, but the hubby got transferred to Raleigh NC

Pix - not arguing, just curious if the head cropping is a personal no-no for you? I've looked at many photographs and proper cropping areas tutorials, and this portion of the head to be cropped is acceptable. Again, just want your thoughts and others as well

yes. which is why I used the word "personally", because its not some kind of official rule. I just don't personally care for head chops, de-saturation (that soft, hazy look...ugh) sun flare, shallow DOF on horizontal subjects, and train tracks.

what is acceptable? who decides what is "acceptable"? for me, acceptable is anything that you and/or the client are happy with.
To me though, when the subject is a person, and your main point of focus is the face/head...i just think the whole head should be in the frame. acceptable cropping to me for people pics are limbs not directly at the joints, waist for half shots, and chest-shoulders for head shots.

Just as a disclaimer, I am, in no way shape or form, making any attempt to label any of the aforementioned situations as officially "acceptable" or "non-acceptable"...im just answering a question about my personal tastes for pictures.
