More NewB photos and trying to figure out this posting thing.

I am working with photoshop a little...and as you can see in the last picture I am wanting to learn how to desaturate everything but one really colorful object in the picture. I am not 100% sure the right/easy way to do this. I took a b/w layer and put it over the color layer and then erased what I wanted (the dog toy) to make the color pop out from the B/W. If you know a much easier way...please tell me!!
