I like the dropped out background, but the reflection in the sunglasses kill them.

If it were a reflection of a softbox, that's one thing, but of a street, it's another.

The lighting of the second one makes her face look chubby, imo. I'm a noob to composition, but maybe have it not be quite as high-key. You can't see any detail on her face, which is good, but it looks like its that way because her face is just one big blown-out highlight.

But I'm just regurgitating composition to someone who already knows it. I'm guessing you're at a level where you know what it takes to compose an image, and are kind of playing with it to see where you can bend the rules. If that's the case ignore what I said.

You need to get your monitor calibrated, because there's still detai lin the face. It's subtle, but it's there. It'd be much easier to see on print.

I like the 1st one. The second one isn't that great though. It is just a straight on shot that has nothing exciting for the eye. There needs to be something standing out in the picture, and the second one does not have it. Maybe if the sunglasses were off then there could be a connection with her eyes, and maybe a tiny tilt in her head. I'm no expert though. Like I said, I like #1.

Smoking doesn't kill you, lung cancer kills you, and is a very serious matter. My grandmother died of lung cancer and to be honest i wonder if anyone close to you has suffered as a result of this illness. However, i find it to be a very important part of American culture. Flattering or not, it's who she is and how i see her.

I guess jumping off a building does not kill either... its the sudden stop... you know what I meant... I never like photos where smoking is made to look "cool"

That's fine. I respect that. No need to get touchy about it. I was just stating, as someone who views your pictures and finds smoking unflattering, it makes me dislike the picture. That's all. So as I stated, these are great shots but I am not crazy about the smoking one.
