Life is full of challenges. Goals are worth setting. I recently hit one of my long time goals of bench pressing 300 pounds. I’ve now moved that goal up to 350. Someone asked me why I would do that, what benefit does that serve? It has no use. I don’t know about everyone else, but I do things without thinking if there is a benefit or not always. Sometimes I set goals simply for the challenge, to know - can I do this? Will I beat this challenge or will it beat me? It’s in human nature to want to conquer the world. If you don’t comprehend that there’s a need to achieve new goals and push yourself, then you’re not living. Set goals for yourself, have them be big, so when you conquer them you’re standing that much higher.
I think George Leigh Mallory said it best in 1922 when he said:
"The first question which you will ask and which I must try to answer is this, 'What is the use of climbing Mount Everest ?' and my answer must at once be, 'It is no use'. There is not the slightest prospect of any gain whatsoever.[…] So, if you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won't see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life."
Granted George Leigh Mallory was climbing Mount Everest.. a far more impressive feat than lifting some amount of weight, but the message to take from this is that there are challenges out there, and from the big or small and there’s a need to achieve them.
Another good quote - this one from A.D.I.D.A.S. -
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live the world they have been given, rather than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It is an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It is a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing."
So go out there and set a goal, and strive to hit it... whether it be photography related or just life related. GO GET EM.
