My attempt at a detail shot. I have recently discovered some new (to me) photographers and David Ward stand out the most to me. His ability to just see past the larger view is amazing.

I like it. More-so, I see what you are after with this kind of shot. I find images like this much more interesting than many "well done" generic photos. This one in particular...I can't say it's extremely interesting, but I see what you are getting at. I'd say that there is no really well-defined pattern or main subject here. I'd say that the perspective itself is a little distracting. For an image like this I would have tried looking straight down. Even some of the more abstract, texture-esq images like this still manage to conjure up a story-of-sorts, or bring something across to the viewer. For example, I love taking pictures of barn walls. I could talk about barn walls all day, and I literally have a volume of barn (exterior) wall photos. Each is unique and tells a story of the history of the wood, nails, and old barn paint applied by farmers decades ago. Barn paint seems to fade differently than any other type of paint, similar to the effect ocean air has on exterior paint. So...even thought this is just a "texture" or "detail" photo, it will still need a little more sense of composition, some balance, etc.
