About a 30 minute drive from the town of Hpa An, formerly the headquarters of a minor smuggler warlord who was also the abbot of the local monastery, an extremely rutted dirt road heads across the paddies towards a steep karst hill.
The road leads into a small dusty parking lot watched over by the statue of a white elephant.
Around behind the statue is an opening into a large dark cave.

Cultural depictions of elephants - Wikipedia
A white elephant is rare and given special significance. It is often considered sacred and symbolises royalty in Thailand and Burma, where it is also considered a symbol of good luck. In Buddhist iconography, the elephant is associated with Queen Maya of Sakya, the mother of Gautama Buddha.
